Drue
By Linda Hays-Gibbs
She pushed her shoe off her foot with her other foot with the toe catching her strap. The shoe fell off and then she tugged on the other one until her foot was free. Wiggling her toes she submerged her tired feet into the depths of the green grass and sweet velvety clover. “Oh! Heavenly days! How wonderful it is to be barefoot on the first day of May, 1963!”
She scanned the heavens. The sun lavished warmth on her cheeks although there was still a slight chill to the ground she felt. She shuddered involuntarily but the the sensation was still delicious! Drue grabbed her shoes off the ground, hefted her books into her arms and started walking home. The yellow school bus drifted off as she rushed ahead climbing the road that led to her house. She could not have wished for a more perfect first day of May. Drue loved going barefoot but it was forbidden until May1st.
Drue was so excited about the summer but She had finished her Sophomore year and was to be a junior in the fall. It was funny to her as she did not feel as grown up as everyone seemed to think she should be. Drew still wanted to play games run in the grass barefoot and roll in the clover. She was quiet, didn’t have many friends and didn’t understand why all the few girlfriends she had were so boy crazy. “Honestly she said out loud, What is the big deal about them? They are weird anyway! They only want to kiss or touch a girl and it makes me nervous to even be around them!”
Drue shrugged her shoulders. She was 15 but would soon turn 16 next month and that was when she could drive,if she had a car. Why would girls want boys when they can drive? Drew laughed and ran up the driveway and into her home.
Drue’s mom grabbed her when she came in the door and hugged her greedily. She laughed,”What’s the problem mom?” “Well, I want to take some pictures of you by my flower garden. Is this okay?” “Yes that great. Just give me a few minutes.””No don’t change! I want you barefoot and just like you are.” “Okay,Let’s go.”
